Can you recover data from a dead phone?
Sometimes a phone that will not turn on can be repaired sufficiently to access its data. The symptoms alone cannot establish whether that will be possible. Start by checking existing backups and explaining which files matter before agreeing to work.
Check what you already have backed up
From another device, check the cloud account or computer backups you normally use. Confirm that the photos, contacts or files you need are actually present and check the backup date. A backup may cover only part of your information.
For iPhone backup instructions, see Apple’s guide to restoring from an existing backup. Restoring a backup is different from extracting files from the broken phone.
Explain that preserving data is the priority
Tell the person assessing the device that you want to preserve its contents. Do not agree to a factory reset, erasure or software restore until you understand the effect on those files. Apple explains that the Restore option reinstalls iOS and erases data in its recovery-mode instructions.
A damaged display, power fault or motherboard problem may require different work. Local Tech Man can discuss assessment and available repair options; data recovery cannot be promised before diagnosis.
What to include in your enquiry
- The phone make and model.
- What happened before it stopped working, including any spill, drop or earlier repair.
- Whether it shows any display, charging or startup response.
- Which files you need and whether you have checked your backups.
Keep passwords and account access codes out of the enquiry. Send the symptoms first and discuss any access needed for the agreed work separately.
Discuss diagnosis before handing over your phone
Water-damage and complex motherboard diagnostics cost £40 for the first hour, agreed before work begins. Further diagnostic charges are quoted and agreed before proceeding. Diagnostic fees apply even if the device cannot be repaired.
