Laptop will not turn on: no power or a blank screen?
“It will not turn on” can describe several different problems. Noticing whether there are lights, sounds or an image helps make the first repair conversation much more useful.
Separate no power from no picture
A computer with no charging light, fan or other response presents differently from one with a working fan and a black display. A startup logo or an error message also means something different from no visible activity. Describe these details rather than assuming which component has failed.
Make a careful first check
For a dry and undamaged computer, check a working power socket and the correct compatible charger. Disconnect non-essential accessories before following the manufacturer’s startup instructions. Do not use a mismatched adapter just because its connector appears to fit.
Use instructions for the exact model
Mac and Windows devices do not all use the same restart or power procedure. Apple and Microsoft publish model-specific guidance. A forced shutdown can lose unsaved work, so it should not be treated as a routine fix for every symptom. Avoid resets, reinstalls and recovery operations if you do not understand their effect on stored files.
When to stop testing
If there was a spill, battery swelling, burning smell or unusual heat, stop using and charging the computer. Do not dismantle it or repeatedly press the power button to see whether it improves. Tell the repairer when the event occurred and whether power has been connected since.
Prepare a useful enquiry
Send the brand and model, any charger or indicator-light behaviour, the exact error message and a short history of the fault. A clear photo can help if it does not reveal private information. Say whether the computer belongs to a business or school and whether important files are backed up.
What happens next
Local Tech Man can discuss startup, display, charging and performance enquiries in Ilford and East London and Essex. An inspection may be needed to distinguish a replaceable part from a more involved fault. We discuss available options and agreed charges before proceeding; no particular component or successful outcome is confirmed from symptoms alone.
General information to help you describe a fault, not a remote diagnosis. Follow your device manufacturer’s instructions and stop if equipment is unsafe.
